Akif and Fariha’s wedding was the perfect closing our ’14 season and we loved every minute of their three-day celebration. The couple knew of us and our work as we had the fortune of documenting two of their good friend’s weddings. So in addition to working with a fantastic couple, it was great to see familiar faces.
The celebration kicked off at night with the Mehndi which included the exchanging of gifts and sweets, dance performances, and the application of mehndi or henna. Talk about color! The following day was the Nikkah or Islamic marriage ceremony which took place at the Islamic Foundation of Villa Park. Muslim ceremonies are traditionally very understated and over in a fairly short amount of time. But after the ceremony the emotions flow and there is no shortage of hugs and and tears of happiness. Later that evening was the elegant Shaadi reception at Ashyana filled with loads of love, laughter, and good food. The next day we made a trip to downtown Chicago for a portrait session along the river. Being late November in Chicago the weather didn’t do us any favors however Akif and Fariha were champs and we had fun creating some beautiful images. And they drew a lot of attention throughout! That evening was the Valima reception at Marriott Oak Brook hosted by Akif’s family. It was another gorgeous affair to celebrate their union and watch the families come together. A real treat was a phenomenal live table and sitar duo who improvised over contemporary tracks. Such a fun night and fitting end to the wedding festivities. Congratulations Akif and Fariha!
